Susanna Clarke |
Susanna Clarke was born in Nottingham in 1959, and spent her childhood in towns in Northern England and Scotland, before going to St Hilda’s College, Oxford. She now lives in Cambridge with her partner, the novelist and reviewer Colin Greenland, whom she met on an Arvon Creative Writing Course ten years ago when she was beginning Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
|
Centuries ago, when magic still existed in England, the greatest magician of all was the Raven King, a human child brought up by fairies. Now at the beginning of the 19th century, he is barely more than a legend, and England no longer believes in practical magic. Then the reclusive Mr Norrell appears and news spreads of the return of magic. He meets a brilliant young magician, Jonathan Strange, and together they dazzle the country with their feats - but their partnership soon turns to rivalry.
