Number the Stars by Lois Lowry reviewed by Sarah Hayes
"Number The Stars gives you an insight into two entirely different worlds. The first being the character (Annemarie) who lives in a modern everyday life, yet the events that take place seem so old and forgotten. The author combines educational historic facts with modern teenage fiction to create a marvellous story told through a young girl. I think expressing opinions through Annemarie not only makes the book more realistic but also captures a wider audience varying from young children to adults. Although Number The Stars is based on a very serious issue there are times when the book is funny and exciting!
Overall, I would give Number The Stars 10/10 mainly because I can now try to understand what life would have been like under the German occupation. I much prefer reading information from a child friendly book than looking it up in a history book. I found the story easy to follow, before Germany seemed a world away, now it feels like Annemarie is my best friend and lives round the corner. Whilst the ending is sad, it shows courage and bravery from Annemarie, it also leaves me wondering could I be so strong if England was invaded?"
