- Three of the 2000 Award winners appear in the top 50 of the Paperback Fastsellers of 2001 (The Bookseller, 4 January 2002). White Teeth by Zadie Smith is at number 4, Bad Blood by Lorna Sage is at number 35 and English Passengers by Matthew Kneale is at 49.
- The only book prize that Roald Dahl ever won was the Whitbread Childrenâs Novel Award in 1983, for The Witches.
- The prize money fund increased this year to a total of £50,000. Each category winner will receive £5,000 with the Book of the Year winner receiving a cheque for £25,000.
- One of the young judges in 2000, 12 year old Adam Usden, subsequently appeared on Radio 4 in the main part of Gerry in the BBCâs adaptation of Gerald Durrellâs autobiography, My Family and Other Animals.
- Several Whitbread-shortlisted and winning books have been turned into highly successful films or television series including:
- The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Kureishi - Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeannette Winterson - The Oscar-nominated Chocolat by Joanne Harris - Aquila by Andrew Norriss - Feliciaâs Journey by William Trevor - The Witches by Roald Dahl - A Good Man in Africa by William Boyd - And, of course, Harry Potter.
